The Real Effects of Social Media on School Students

In a world where a child learns to swipe before they can write, social media has become more than a passing trend—it's part of daily life. Whether it’s WhatsApp chats, Instagram reels, or YouTube shorts, many school-going children are already deep in the digital loop. But what does this constant online connection mean for their emotional, academic, and social development?

Let’s take a closer look.

The Attraction: Why Are Kids Hooked?

# Peer Presence: If everyone in the class is on Instagram or Snapchat, the pressure to join is immense. No one wants to feel left out.

Validation and Identity: Likes, comments, and shares act like mini applause. Children often equate them with their self-worth.

Creative Expression: Social media gives kids a platform to share their thoughts, art, music, and talents instantly.

Entertainment and Escape: Funny videos, games, and meme culture offer a dopamine rush that’s hard to resist.

The Effects: The Good, The Bad, and The Alarming

The Good

# Communication Skills: Kids often learn to express themselves better—through text, visuals, or storytelling.

Awareness and Exposure: Platforms introduce them to different cultures, global issues, and opportunities.

Digital Literacy: Navigating the online world helps kids learn tech skills early.

The Bad

# Addiction: Scrolling becomes a habit, often cutting into sleep, study time, and real-world interaction.

Academic Decline: Notifications and constant pings reduce attention span and disrupt concentration.

Body Image Issues: Overexposure to filtered, unrealistic standards can lead to insecurity and low self-esteem.

The Alarming

# Cyberbullying: From name-calling in comment sections to targeted messages, online cruelty can deeply scar young minds.

Privacy Dangers: Kids may unknowingly overshare, making them vulnerable to predators or scams.

Mental Health Risks: Increased screen time has been linked to anxiety, depression, and loneliness, even among young children.

What Can Parents and Schools Do?

# Start the Conversation Early

Don’t wait until there’s a problem. Talk openly about the positives and pitfalls of social media from a young age.

Set Digital Boundaries

Time limits, screen-free zones (like during meals and before bed), and age-appropriate content filters go a long way.

Be a Digital Role Model

Children mirror adult behavior. If they see you constantly on your phone, they’ll think it’s normal.

# Encourage Offline Fun

Hobbies, sports, reading, and playdates offer meaningful ways for kids to connect—without screens.

The Takeaway: Social media is neither a monster nor a miracle. Like any tool, its impact depends on how it’s used. While it can open doors to creativity, connection, and learning, unchecked use can quietly erode the well-being of school children. The goal is not to cut the cord but to build the bridge—between technology and thoughtful, healthy usage.

A Cinematic Tribute to the People's President

On the 18th of July, 2025, our school was privileged to host a very special screening of the inspirational film Engal Nayagan Kalam – a cinematic ode to the life and legacy of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. What made the event even more memorable was the presence of the film’s director, Mr. Vivekanandhan R., who graciously joined us to interact with our students and share his vision behind the making of the film.

The screening was not just an ordinary movie experience. It was a soulful journey into the life of a man who rose from humble beginnings to become the Missile Man of India, and later, the People’s President. Through powerful visuals and heartfelt storytelling, the movie captured the essence of Dr. Kalam’s values – simplicity, determination, discipline, and a boundless love for students.

As the film unfolded, the students grew silent with reflection. Many students were visibly moved – some even in tears – as they connected deeply with the struggles and aspirations of Dr. Kalam. The impact was profound. The movie did not just inform; it inspired. It lit a spark in young hearts, urging them to dream bigger, think deeper, and act with purpose.

After the screening, Mr. Vivekanandhan R. interacted with the students. With warmth and humility, he spoke about why he created Engal Nayagan Kalam – not just as a tribute, but as a mission to spread Kalam’s ideals to every child in the country. He emphasized that the future of India lies in classrooms, and that Dr. Kalam’s dream was to see every student become a torchbearer of progress and peace. The interaction left a lasting impression. Students asked questions, shared their thoughts, and expressed how the movie had touched their hearts.

We are grateful to Mr. Vivekanandhan for his presence and for reminding us of the power of stories – especially those that are rooted in truth, service, and the spirit of a man who continues to guide us from beyond..

Bribes and Rewards: Knowing the Difference

Reinforcement that builds inner motivation in children. In the journey of parenting and teaching, few things are as tricky to navigate as motivation. We all want children to do the right things - complete homework, show kindness, follow rules - and it's natural to use some form of encouragement. But how do we ensure we’re building character and not just compliance? This is where the difference between rewards and bribes becomes essential.

What’s the Difference - Bribes / Rewards?

Bribe: Offered before a behavior to manipulate it
Reward: Given after a positive behavior

Bribe: Coaxes the child into doing something they already resist
Reward: Reinforces effort, consistency, or good choices

Bribe: Spontaneous, emotion-driven, often during conflict
Reward: Planned, consistent, value-based

Bribe: Encourages external dependency
Reward: Builds internal motivation

A Quick Example:

Bribe: “If you read for 15 minutes now, I’ll give you chocolate.
Reward: “You’ve been reading every day for a week without reminders! Let’s pick a new book this weekend as a treat.”

See the shift?
Bribes are quick fixes that may lead to bargaining behavior.
Rewards recognize effort and celebrate growth.

Why It Matters?

Bribes can unintentionally send the message:

“You’ll only do good things if there’s something in it for you.” Over time, children might stop seeing value in the behavior itself and only respond to “what they’ll get.”

On the other hand, meaningful rewards - like praise, quality time, a special privilege - can reinforce effort and teach that good behavior brings positive outcomes, both internally (like pride) and externally.

How to reinforce Positively at School/ Home?

Catch them doing right: Appreciate their behavior after it happens—“I noticed you helped your classmate/ sibling without being asked. That’s wonderful!”

Use non-material rewards: An extra bedtime story, choosing dinner, or planning a family picnic.

Praise effort, not just result: “You worked hard on your Math practice!” instead of “You got 10/10!”

Be consistent: If rewards are erratic or desperate, they lose values.

Slowly fade rewards: As habits grow, reduce rewards and replace with reflection: “How did that feel to finish without help?”

At school and at home, our goal is not just obedience—but ownership. By choosing rewards over bribes, we guide children toward self-respect, self-discipline, and the joy of doing what’s right—not just what’s rewarded.

Let’s raise children who say, “I did this because I wanted to,” not “I did this because I had to.”

Mobile Games & Young Minds: A Hidden Academic Hurdle

In today's digital world, mobile games have become almost unavoidable. They’re just a tap away, often free, and offer instant gratification. While some games can be educational and age-appropriate, the vast majority pose serious concerns when it comes to children’s academic performance and emotional well-being.

What Happens When Gaming Gets Excessive?
When students spend excessive hours glued to mobile games—especially violent, competitive, or addictive ones—they face a range of problems that can quietly erode their academic success.

Reduced Attention Span: Fast-paced mobile games constantly shift scenes, challenges, and rewards. This overstimulation makes it harder for children to focus in a real-world classroom where patience, deep thinking, and sustained attention are key.

Poor Academic Performance: Time spent gaming often eats into time meant for homework, reading, or revision. Students may rush through assignments, lose interest in studies, or begin to view schoolwork as less exciting than screen-based rewards.

Sleep Disruption: Many students play games late into the night. The blue light from screens delays melatonin production, affecting sleep. Inadequate rest means tired minds in class—leading to poor retention and participation.
Emotional Dysregulation

Some mobile games, especially those filled with violence or intense competition, can cause aggression, frustration, or dependency. This emotional imbalance can affect peer relationships and classroom behavior.
Why Age-Appropriate Games Matter?

Not all screen time is harmful. Educational games designed for specific age groups can help improve problem-solving skills, vocabulary, memory, and creativity. But here’s the catch—many children are playing games not suited for their age. Titles like PUBG, Free Fire, and Call of Duty are rated 16+ or 18+, yet are commonly found on devices used by 10-year-olds.

Parental Tip: Before installing a game, check the age rating, read reviews, and try it yourself for a few minutes. If a game is based on violence, online chat rooms, or constant microtransactions, it’s best avoided.
What Can Parents Do?

· Set Screen-Time Limits using built-in device settings or parental control apps.

· Encourage Outdoor Play, Reading, and Hobbies that balance tech use with real-life skills.

· Have Honest Conversations about the impact of games on their minds and goals.

Technology is here to stay and mobile games are part of it. But when usage goes unchecked, it can quietly damage a child’s academic foundation. Let’s work together — parents, teachers, and students — to ensure that digital tools are used wisely and age-appropriately, supporting learning, not distracting from it.

Let’s raise a generation that games with balance, learns with joy, and grows with purpose.

A Celebration of Student Voices

Learning in the classroom is not always confined to notebooks and pens — it extends far beyond traditional methods. The public speaking session on 25th June was a perfect example of how experiential learning can bring stories to life and ignite creativity in young minds. Our students took the timeless fable "The Hare and the Tortoise" and transformed it into a lively and engaging enactment. With enthusiasm and confidence; they stepped into the roles of the hare, the tortoise, and the narrator, using expressive dialogues and imaginative voice modulations to bring each character to life. Their thoughtful use of body language and movements added a delightful charm to the performance — truly the icing on the cake! This activity was not just about storytelling; it was a powerful exercise in communication, collaboration, and self-expression. We are incredibly proud of the effort and energy each child put into the session.

Hearty Congratulations to all the students who participated and Mrs.Geedhapriya.G who guided them!
